The curriculum at EXPLO is unusual: It allows students to investigate subjects they're not likely to encounter during the school year. Our courses aren't for credit and are ungraded. They encourage students to step away from focusing on performance and evaluation, and instead follow their passions and interests. An EXPLO classroom is lively and active. Students are moving, designing projects, and challenging one another. Here, learning is captivating, challenging, and fun.
"Our daughter attends an excellent public school, where she is required to fit into their boxes, and she is pretty good at it. But she is so much more than that and EXPLO allowed her to plumb the depths of her imagination."
Melissa P., EXPLO Parent
"EXPLO was one of the most formative experiences of my life. Over six summers, I grew to be more independent, outgoing, creative, and intellectual, and I made some amazing friendships that I have continued to this day."
Katie Q., EXPLO Alum and Yale University student
"The thing I wish most is why can't school be like EXPLO. School is just like, ' Book. Open. Read. Write.' EXPLO is the complete opposite. There are no demands that end in period marks. It feels like one big creative paragraph."
Prode P., EXPLO Student
"EXPLO was one of the most thrilling intellectual communities I've ever had the privilege of being a part of... EXPLO was a place where a person like me, who loves learning for the sake of learning, could really thrive."
Izzy Kasdin, EXPLO Alum + Faculty Alum, Princeton Graduate, Gates Scholar at Cambridge University
At EXPLO, we know that kids can be gifted in lots of areas that are not generally tested. Often, students have not unearthed their strongest natural abilities, particularly if their talents lie in areas that are not part of the traditional school curriculum. At EXPLO, we believe that every student at the program has significant potential in some area or another. We want to help students learn more about what can light them up both intellectually and emotionally. To that end, we push our students to step outside of their comfort zones, to experiment, and to try something new every day.
By design, EXPLO hires high-energy, passionate teachers who are involved in all aspects of student life. Often, they are teachers, residential advisors, and coaches all in one. We rigorously train them in the well-crafted, research-based methods and thinking that guide our work with young people. We also know that real professionals desire careful and robust supervision — it’s the way they and their colleagues become even better educators. So we have a deep and broad team supervising and supporting every EXPLO faculty member, resulting in excellent support and supervision of our students.
Moira Kelly, Executive Director and President
Moira Kelly was appointed Executive Director and President of EXPLO in 2007. During the summer, she is a familiar face at all EXPLO programs. Since 1985, Moira has held numerous positions at EXPLO, and in 1994 became the founding Head of Program at EXPLO at St. Mark's (now EXPLO at Wheaton).
“The Gold Standard.” Time and again, that’s what the EXPLO faculty has been called. We are a mix of highly experienced educators and professionals that lead a dynamic teaching staff that includes talented and mature college and graduate students. It’s a bold combination that generates a vibrant and unstuffy learning community. Some of our teachers are professionals who started with EXPLO when they were in college. We also welcome visiting scholars and professionals who share their wisdom and insights about their disciplines and industries. But many of our instructors are students themselves — deeply engaged with learning, and swimming with the same cultural forces as our EXPLO students. This helps break down barriers quickly, and make meaningful, relatable connections between the ideas and the world in which our young people live. They are the perfect role models to inspire and energize EXPLO students. EXPLO sees faculty and staff hiring each summer as a talent search. Read about some of the extraordinary people who worked for EXPLO while in college and graduate school.
No program takes teaching more seriously than EXPLO. We aim to light students up about learning, which means whether you’re new to teaching or you’ve been doing it for years, you participate in our extensive professional development process. We also put loads of resources into observing every teacher during the summer and making sure that EXPLO classes are places of deep and active learning. Our results are so exceptional that schools across the world, nonprofits, and even leading corporations have asked us to train their professionals to be more engaging and creative teachers.
