Our faculty love to teach. But more than that, they love to learn. Which is why our faculty bring that passion — along with months of rigorous planning and training — to EXPLO. In the end, we don’t care how long you’ve been teaching, how long your résumé is or if you’ve got a solid research record. What we care about is good teaching and if you can truly connect with students.
Time and again, the EXPLO faculty and staff have been described as setting the “gold standard” for summer programs. We are a mix of highly experienced educators and professionals that lead an enthusiastic teaching staff of many talented and mature college and graduate students. It’s a dynamic combination that generates a vibrant and welcoming learning community.
At EXPLO, exceptional teaching is at the heart of what we do, and our talented faculty is required to complete a robust teacher development program at the start of every summer. Our results are so exceptional that schools across the world, nonprofits, and even leading corporations have asked us to develop curriculum and to train their professionals to be more engaging and creative teachers.
We intentionally hire staff of an adjacent generation to work with our students because they, too, are deeply engaged with learning and swimming in the same cultural forces. They can quickly break down barriers, and make authentic and relatable connections between the ideas and the world our students are navigating. They are the perfect role models to inspire and energize EXPLO students.
Plus, these aren’t just any college or graduate students. We are in the talent search business, hiring emerging leaders with incredible potential. Learn more about some of the movers and shakers out in the world who worked at EXPLO during college or graduate school.
EXPLO looks for adults who can be exceptional role models, can inspire students to new heights, and people who genuinely enjoy spending time with young people. We travel across the United States each year recruiting an extraordinary group of people. Almost all EXPLO faculty and staff live on campus throughout the summer so that they become part of the extended EXPLO family. Students see faculty and staff not only in the class, but in the dining halls, on the playing fields, and on field trips.
David Torcoletti has worked at EXPLO for more than 15 years. He works for EXPLO year-round and moves to campus each summer with his family so that he can personally oversee the operations of the program. David is intimately involved in the hiring of each staff member, with curriculum planning, and with the development of all policies and procedures used at the program. Prior to working at EXPLO, David was the Dean of Students at Milton Academy, and a School Dean, House Head, and teacher at Northfield Mount Hermon School. He is often called on to do consulting work with private day and boarding schools regarding student life issues. David is a summa cum laude graduate of Ohio University and earned his M.F.A. at Bard College as a Milton Avery Scholar.
