Orthopedics + Sports Medicine

2-week Concentration

To improve the lives of individuals with injuries – orthopedic surgeons, sports physiologists, and physical therapists need to be at the top of their game.

In the Orthopedics + Sports Medicine concentration, students learn how to keep athletes and individuals in top shape — in the operating room, training room, and on the field. Survey the muscles and joints used in physical exercise to find out why injuries like a torn ACL are more common in soccer than swimming, and use movement analysis to detect healthy and harmful movement patterns. Practice splinting, suturing, and stabilizing muscles, and, when the situation calls for it, participate in a simulated arthroscopic surgery, scrubbing into the OR to repair a torn ligament. You’ll uncover the up-close life of sports medicine specialists as you set fractures, treat injuries, analyze spine trauma, and operate to get your athletes back in the game. As you work alongside trainers, surgeons, and professors, you’ll explore the best pathways to prevent and treat an injury, and discover where you might fit within them.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Sports Medicine – Evaluate foot arches and range of movement and identify ligaments and muscles before wrapping quads, taping ankles and arches, and evaluating for patellar tendonitis or a quadriceps strain.

Arthroscopic Surgery Simulation – Complete a practice knee surgery, finding the ACL, MCL, and PCL as you go. Review case studies with Orthopedic Surgeons as you walk through a series of real-life surgeries that they’ve encountered.

Biomechanics + Movement Analysis – Explore the latest research around bone imaging, bone strength, and gait analysis from researchers in the field, and use sensors and motion capture cameras to predict and prevent injuries.

Recovery + Rehabilitation – Practice setting a bone and making a cast, then work with physical therapists to explore physical therapy techniques, adaptive technologies and adaptive sports equipment.

She loved EXPLO Ortho so much that I asked her if she was interested in pursuing a career in sports training or physical therapy. She quickly replied, “NO. I want to be a pediatric orthopedic surgeon now!” I was speechless and knew at that moment how EXPLO truly changed her life.

WHAT IS A CONCENTRATION?

Concentrations at EXPLO are a deep dive into a single subject for students who have a strong sense of what they’re interested in and what they may want to pursue for a career or future study.

Students who enroll in a concentration take just the single course over the course of one or two weeks (depending upon which program you choose). While you are part of the larger EXPLO community, you’ll find that most of your time is spent with your Intensive cohort — other students who, like you, are completely dialed in to the subject you’re exploring.
