Keeping Health + Safety at the Center

As we plan for Summer 2021 with COVID-19 safety front-of-mind, some of our programming may be subject to change. The schedule here reflects our current planning, based on the latest guidance and recommendations from the CDC and public health officials. Daily Schedule

From the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning to the moment your head hits the pillow at night, there is always something happening at EXPLO. The best part? You get to choose how to spend your day — from what courses and electives you take, to which clubs and leagues you join, to how you spend your Flex Time and which trips you attend on the weekends. It’s everyone’s summer break — at EXPLO you can make it your own.

Academic Day

At EXPLO, we balance a healthy dose of independence with regularly scheduled check-ins and staff supervision throughout the day. Sharpen your mind in the morning with your chosen courses, and spend your afternoons investigating new passions through activities and events that bring our community together. Meet up with your living group on the Lawn, kick off a new sports league or join a student-led club. The choice is yours.

Weekday Schedule
7:45 a.m. Residential Morning Huddle
The Morning Huddle is when students and staff meet with their living groups, review the day’s schedule, learn about afternoon activity options, issue the day’s challenge, play games, and share goals with their groups.
8:15 Breakfast
9:30 Courses
Students attend one course period in the morning, with a 10-15 minute break about halfway through the period. Courses are fun and hands-on, with plenty of room for creative decision-making and thoughtful peer-to-peer discussions.
11:45 Lunch
1:00 p.m. Afternoon Activities
In the afternoon, students may head back to their morning class for an extended learning period or create or join clubs and leagues. Recent clubs and leagues have included journalism, strategy games, Ultimate Frisbee, basketball, soccer, philosophy, improv, meditation, and community service initiatives.
2:30 Afternoon Electives or Explosé
Activities are an exciting way to connect with your living group, classmates, and friends.
Or at the conclusion of a course, students and staff gather for a student-run community-building event filled with important updates, musical performances, House Challenges, and project shares from the week’s courses.
4:00 p.m. Afternoon Huddle
Students hear afternoon announcements and might even participate in a House Challenge before moving into Flex Time.
Evening Schedule
4:45 p.m. Flex Time
Flex Time is (staff supervised) chill time, when students can hang out with friends on the lawn, join a club, play games, get creative in the Art Studio, or relax in the Student Lounge.
5:15 Dinner
6:30 Evening Events
After a jam-packed day, the fun is still just getting started. Grab a spot on the lawn for a movie night, or get ready to be wowed by a magician’s outdoor performance. Maybe you’ll watch an improv comedy troupe, or even get up on stage yourself to show off a special talent. No matter what the night has planned, it’s sure to be memorable.
8:00 Winding Down Time
Students have some relaxing time to themselves, during which they might enjoy music on the lawn, toss a Frisbee, or make next-day plans with friends.
9:30 Hall Check-In
8th Grade Check-In at 9:00 p.m.
10:15 p.m. Room Curfew

Weekend

On weekends, students can take advantage of a slightly longer snooze before jumping into a variety of recreational morning activity choices. After a quick refuel at lunch, it’s time for some friendly competitions. By the late afternoon, students will have some time to catch their breath and flex their decision-making skills with some unstructured free time before dinner, then it’s time to grab a seat on the lawn and enjoy a blockbuster evening event.

Weekend Schedule
8:15 a.m. Morning Huddle
8:30 Breakfast
The most important meal of the day!
9:45 Morning Activity A
Feel like playing some games with that new friend you made in class this week? Or maybe you aim for fame and glory on the kickball field. Or perhaps you’re keen to unwind in a quiet space with a good book. Take your pick from a variety of athletic, performative, puzzling, and creative options.
11:15 Morning Activity B
Half a morning not enough time for all the EXPLO excitement? Lucky for you, it’s morning activities round two! Maybe you’ll take to the stage in improv challenges, or learn about the art of bookbinding. Try your hand at the video game tournament or head out for a staff-led jog around the neighborhood.
12:45 p.m. Lunch
1:45 House Challenges
When you arrive at EXPLO, you’ll be assigned a House (think Harry Potter, but cooler). Throughout the summer, your House will compete for points across a gauntlet of challenges. Whether you’re constructing a cardboard tower as tall as the sky, starring in your own music video, attempting to hit the most home runs, or wracking your brain to crack the puzzles in an EXPLO escape room, our House challenges will put your creative problem-solving skills to the test. Who will win the coveted House Cup?
