Explo - Learning Through Exploration

Where Your Passion for Animals Becomes a Lifelong Purpose.

Since 1976, EXPLO has
reached 80,000 students from
50 states and 93 countries
around the world.

We Don’t Put Classroom Walls Around Learning

Every day at EXPLO is intentionally designed so that learning doesn’t end when classes do. Each activity, every encounter is an open-ended opportunity for discovery and growth.

Partners + Advisors

When you come to EXPLO, we connect you with some of the most brilliant minds in the field. These remarkable individuals lend depth and perspective to your work; answer your questions about careers; and help shape your experience throughout the program.

From the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning until your head hits the pillow at lights out, every day at EXPLO is jam-packed with courses, entertainment, trips, and fun!

Teaching +

Our year-round staff works for 10 months every off-season to develop curriculum and programming that will knock your socks off. (Unless you’re in the science lab, where closed-toe shoes are required.)

    Trip Highlight: Franklin Park Zoo

Travel to the Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo and get a behind-the-scenes tour of zoology in action. Learn how to safely capture animals, including rope skills, shooting blow dart sedatives, and the proper use of snake hooks.

    Program Highlight: Numa

The “Numa,” an EXPLO-choreographed dance, makes a daily (at least) appearance out on the quad. Students voluntarily stop their wall ball games, quiet reading, and ninja hula-hooping at a chance to dance with the entire program to this catchy quirky tune.

    Trip Highlight: Ocean State Equine

With teeth that extend for the entire length of their jaw, oral equine care can be a bit complicated. Learn how to conduct dental and medical evaluations at the Ocean State Equine in Rhode Island. (You saw it straight from the horse’s mouth.)

    Course Highlight: Curious Creatures Visit

Have you ever held a boa constrictor? What about a tarantula? Maybe a baby crocodile? Now’s your chance. Curious Creatures, a New England organization that houses unique and exotic creatures, brings the world of animals to you.

    Sneaker Activity: Wall Ball

Participate in one of the most popular activities at EXPLO. Rules are rules though: You must learn to bring camaraderie, good sportsmanship, and effort every time you step up to the game

    Course Highlight: Ultrasound Training

Get up close and personal to a beating heart! Using a friendly dog as a live teaching aid, a professional veterinary radiologist will show you where different organs live in a living a creature.

Trip Highlight: New England Wildlife Center

Head over to the New England Wildlife center to see animal rehabilitation in action, learning how to protect and care for non-domesticated animals – from baby possums and skunks to large birds.

    Weekend Trip: Treetop Adventures

Are you ready for the best climbing and zip-line experience that the Greater Boston area has to offer? Spend the weekend with EXPLO at Wheaton students, choosing from a dozen different trips — one of which has you flying through the air!

EXPLO Reinvented the Learning Experience.
We Continue to Do So — Every Day

From the halls of MIT to the minds of curious young people from across the U.S. and around the world, learning through exploration combines an array of experiences — from hands-on courses and workshops to outdoor activities and weekend trips — that transform the way students engage with the world. More than 40 years later, EXPLO continues to reinvent the learning experience. Educators, nonprofits, and corporate leaders alike now seek EXPLO’s knowledge and expertise in engaged learning, critical making, and design thinking to drive their organizations forward.

EXPLO is short for Exploration. Each
summer, 90% of students choose
to attend our Exploration Programs.
How to Choose Your Program

It is awesome that we can talk with professionals from out in the field of veterinary medicine first hand. I really like how interactive EXPLO is, like when were able to listen to the dogs' breathing, check their pulses, and swab their cheeks.

Say Hello!

For many families, attending an info meeting in your local area or on one of our campuses is a great way to get a feel for what a summer at EXPLO has to offer. Meet our Executive Director, Head of Programs, or Director of Admission, ask questions, and get a first-hand feel for our programs.
