Medieval Battle Contraptions

Explore basic physics through the construction and operation of medieval battle contraptions, and with your team, take over the kingdom.

The battle is on. It’s time to take back the castle — and the kingdom — that’s rightfully ours. Working together, we’ll figure out how to breach our opponent’s walls and defeat their armies (and the tools and medieval contraptions we’ll need to bring down their defenses). How will we do it? Basic physics, of course. We’ll use levers, weights, and pulleys to operate catapults, battering rams, and trebuchets that will break down their defenses and give us the upper hand. In the process, you’ll learn about trajectory, transfer of energy principles, and how to aim large projectiles. By the end of the course, taking over the kingdom will be only half the fun — the other half will be discovering the secrets behind medieval science.

Course Highlights

  • Engage in a culminating battle with another class and their constructed kingdom

  • Build your own catapults and battering rams to be used in your attack

  • Collaborate with your teammates to calculate the strengths and weaknesses of various weapons as you strategize

  • Explore basic physics through the construction and operation of medieval battle contraptions

You might not know this, but there’s a lot of math that goes into launching a trebuchet. It’s really cool that adding or taking out just a little bit of weight on the pendulum part can change your trajectory completely. It’s pretty tough to get it absolutely on target. But, we’re getting better!
