International Students

Come Experience the World at EXPLO

Our global community of curious and creative individuals come from 40 U.S. states and 70 countries. Meet people of varying backgrounds, customs, and beliefs — engage, debate, and add your own views to the mix. Here, you won’t just take courses with American students — you’ll live in the same residential halls, eat in the same dining halls, and explore the world of people and ideas with new friends from places like California, Venezuela, Paris, and Chicago.

Explore America — Expand Your Worldview

Experience American culture through some of our greatest sights and cities. Historic Boston, Massachusetts, is in Wellesley’s backyard. Go sailing on Boston Harbor. Tour iconic American universities. Explore the New England Aquarium and Boston Museum of Science. Head into the town of Wellesley with your classmates and chat over iced coffee.

Every moment of the day — whether during classes or quad time, meal time, main events, or dorm life — you’ll encounter world views that will stretch your own, and beliefs that will challenge you how you think about people and ideas. All the while, you’ll be learning the nuances, slang, customs, and habits of your new American and international friends (who are sure to be part of your life for years to come).

English and Academics

Students come to EXPLO at Wellesley for a variety of reasons. Some would like to attend an English language-based boarding school or international school. Others are interested in one day attending an American college or university, or improving their future educational and career opportunities. Most international students at EXPLO at Wellesley, however, are fluent in English and want to be part of a community where they can explore the world of people and ideas with enthusiastic teachers and classmates.

The working language of EXPLO at Wellesley is English. To enroll in the program, students must be able to speak and understand English at an intermediate or fluent level. To ensure that students will be able to participate in all aspects of the program — from academics to residential life to extracurricular activities — international students who do not attend a school with an English language-based curriculum may need to interview with EXPLO so that we may assess their English speaking abilities. Once a student has submitted an application and deposit, we will contact the student’s family about scheduling an interview, should we determine that one is necessary.

Advanced English Speakers
Regular academic offerings at EXPLO at Wellesley offer advanced English speakers a great language immersion experience because they are not lecture style, but instead are active and project-based. Advanced English speakers choose from the full course offerings at EXPLO at Wellesley. They are also eligible for our one- and two-week EXPLO Focus programs: Medical RoundsOrthopedics + Sports Medicine, and Startup Entrepreneurship.

Intermediate English Speakers
For intermediate-level speakers, EXPLO offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The goal of this specialized course is to improve students’ oral English and comprehension skills through hands-on projects, role-plays, activities, and intensive writing and speaking exercises. In addition to one ESOL course and its associated evening activities, students take one additional course from our regular EXPLO at Wellesley offerings.

An additional fee of $600 applies for all students enrolled in ESOL.

Emerging English Speakers
For students at the beginning of their study of English — Early English Language Learners — EXPLO offers English Immersion on the campus of Wheaton College for students ages 9-13.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Service

We know that one of the big concerns about traveling so far from home is the transportation. Our staff (easily identifiable in bright orange EXPLO t-shirts) meets students at Boston’s Logan International Airport, escorts them to campus, and helps them settle in. A staff member will remain at the airport until we know that the last student has been picked up.

When it’s time to return home at the end of the session, we take students to the airport and stay there until we’re sure everyone is safe and in the air. We know you would not take chances with your children, and neither will we.

There is a $60 fee each way for pick-up and drop-off service.
