Enter the lab for a close-up and hands-on experience with chemistry.

Observe the properties of dry ice while using thermodynamics to create your very own ice cream. Test the characteristics of crystal polymers. Figure out how to make water vanish before your eyes, freeze bubbles, and (safely) explode watermelons. As you experiment with an assortment of household items, discover how chemistry is applied in various professional industries. By performing a variety of intriguing experiments, you’ll shape your understanding of chemistry and how it impacts the world around us.

Course Highlights

  • Experimental Design

    Outline your own experiments using the scientific method as a guide, with experimental design challenges that range from creating a voluminous exothermic reaction to determining the accurate calorie-count in a single potato chip.

  • Exploding Watermelons

    There’s never been a better excuse to blow up a watermelon! Apply the Ideal Gas Law to engineer a safe method to create pressure and cause a massive melon explosion.

  • Data Collection + Analysis

    Develop your own functional hand warmer and collect data to see how your creation compares to those of other scientists in the class. After a thorough analysis of the results, hypothesize how to generate even more heat in a future iteration.

  • Dry Ice Properties

    Play with solid carbon dioxide, a substance that is much colder than ice. Experiment with how it interacts with its environment by testing it with dye, metal, and soap, to create different colors and even sounds.

This class is different from any other class because it is so much more fun than school. We do a lot more activities. We do science experiments every day instead of doing them only once every few weeks. I have learned so much about chemistry—like color change due to acids or bases—that I can use in school.
