2017 Program Dates

Focus Program
Session One July 2 – July 15, 2017

Imagine a future where every day you get to cook the food you love shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most talented (and acclaimed) chefs in the business. Imagine sourcing fresh ingredients, starting with a recipe, and then riffing off in your own direction — creating a culinary experience that could only come from you. At EXPLO Chef, that future can begin now.

Learn from the best in the business. EXPLO faculty and guest chefs will mentor you and provide hands-on instruction. Our EXPLO master chefs include:

  • Executive Chef Nicholas Schiarizzi, an award-winning 3rd-generation chef whose successful restaurants and catering businesses set the table for him to teach some of Boston’s culinary artists
  • Chef Edgar P. Ievins, a passionate chef and baker whose expertise includes personalized gourmet meals with medical and dietary accommodations
  • Founding Chef Jerome Picca, a 30-year veteran chef whose acclaimed restaurants delighted diners for decades, and whose culinary management has run kitchens across New England

Take trips to Boston’s best restaurants and gain insight from top chefs. As you work with professionals in the field, you’ll get great advice on what you should be doing in high school and college to launch your career in the culinary arts.

Explore the best of both worlds. After studying the French art of the four mother sauces, interviewing a guest chef, working on knife skills, and pairing an entrée with a perfect side salad, you have an EXPLO evening jam-packed with fun and adventure. Hang out with friends during a low-key “chill period,” or take part in optional activities in the arts, athletics — or the absurd (like the world’s largest robot dance). Later, catch a live performance, set sail on Boston Harbor, or bounce around at Carnival Night. It’s EXPLO — the choice is yours.

Living on the campus of Wellesley College is a great learning opportunity. EXPLO could be your first time living with a roommate or the first time you do laundry. You’ll experience what it’s like to live away from home, but with the support and guidance of your Living Group and Residential Advisors (RAs). RAs live on your floor, host check-ins throughout the day, and keep you informed about what’s happening on campus.

In your Living Group, you’ll meet new friends from around the world or down the street. You’ll discover shared interests among a group of people from incredibly different backgrounds. Our community of staff and students will encourage you to try new things, experience new ideas, ask questions, and search for answers. At EXPLO, this is our “normal” — and in no time at all, it will become yours, too.

Wellesley College’s exceptional facilities set the stage for an incredible summer. Spend three weeks on one of Forbes magazine’s Most Beautiful College Campuses in the World (designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr., no less!). Put on a musical performance for your peers in the Alumnae Hall theater, join your friends for Frisbee on the Quad, or become a board game master — all without ever leaving this magical, 500-acre campus.

Wellesley Campus and Facilities

EXPLO Focus is a pre-high school program that is tailored to the needs of 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students. Independence and choice are core elements of the EXPLO experience, and they are established within a set of physical and emotional boundaries that help our students feel supported and safe to explore. Our staff will check in with you multiple times a day to make sure you are getting the most out of the program and to answer any questions you might have. Our 1-to-6 staff-to-student ratio not only ensures proper supervision of residence halls, trips, open time in town, and activities — it reassures that we know our students and can meet their needs.

Why EXPLO Chef?

You might have guessed that the EXPLO Chef Focus program is not for the faint of heart. Strong burners, hot ovens, and daily cooking challenges will test your mettle and challenge you to create restaurant-worthy dishes you’d be proud to serve to your present (and future) patrons. Shopping for ingredients at Boston’s famed Haymarket, cooking dishes, plating them, and cleaning your stations to perfection — on deadline — will give you very real taste as to how chefs prepare 90 covers a night and work to make each dish more innovative and delicious than the one before.

As we like to say: EXPLO is what school would be if school was always awesome.
