Debate and discussion among students of different backgrounds and beliefs has been a pillar of the Explo experience for 40 years. This year, EXPLO launched Join the Debates, a curricular framework that employs EXPLO’s Collaborative Discussion Method, for educators working with students in grades 6 through 12. In cooperation with the Commission on Presidential Debates and in partnership with PBS Education and the National Governors Association, Join the Debates encourages young people to engage in civil conversation on issues important to the U.S. presidential debates and election.
“It’s really helping students to become more articulate about why they think the way they do. It's also pushing them to develop cognitive empathy — something young people will need to possess to successfully navigate a rapidly changing world. These are learned skills — they are not things you can tell someone how to do; they're things you have to practice."
