victoria from maine (7/30)

Victoria is new at Explo. She's from Maine and she's going into the 10th grade. She's making good friends here and having a great time in her classes. It's a little too early to think about college, but she could definitely see herself pursuing some of her advertising interests.

What's your first course?
Web design. Right now we're working on making a homepage. We just started today. It's new to me, I've never done it before. We've learned HTML coding and how to make logos and work with Adobe Illustrator.

What will your homepage be like?
I'm doing a business website, a massage business. We'll make some more pages for it as we continue.

Are you enjoying the work?
Yeah, I like working with computers, but I don't really have any experience with it.

What about your second course?
Advertising and marketing. We're working on making a commercial about a new product that we came up with. We didn't really come up with a name for it yet, but it's like invisible dust stuff that you put on yourself so you can become invisible and walk through walls.

Nice. That sounds like it would sell itself. What kind of commercial are you making?
We were working on that today; we came up with a script. People are in Commons dining hall and need to get to check-in for living groups, so one kid walks through the walls, another kid becomes invisible, and another kid tries to walk through the wall but just kind of falls back after he hits the wall because he didn't have it. Then they all get to check-in and one of the kids is still invisible.

Sounds good. Will you be acting in the commercial?
I'm filming it.

What kinds of things are you learning in that class?
We're learning about what kinds of things you should look for in advertising. There are kinds of things you should make sure you have in commercials and other things you shouldn't. You don't want one that's too long and you want to make sure it's entertaining and that people aren't going to get bored of it. Also you have to worry about audience targeting --make sure that you're getting the right age group interested in it. We're probably targeting kids our age.

Do you film it soon?
We're filming on Thursday.

Do you have a plan in mind for how someone will walk through a wall?
No, we're kind of still working on that [laughs].

What's your mini-course?
My mini-course is "30 Second Spot". We've watched some commercials and discussed them. We've also been filming a commercial for getting people to want to come to Explo. Some people are doing them for staff, others are targeting parents, and we're targeting the kids.

Can you tell me about that commercial?
We took different clips of some classes going on and we got a couple of interviews we put in there, a few seconds here and there. There's background music which has a fast beat and we're trying to keep people entertained.

Is this the sort of thing you could see yourself doing in the future?
Yeah, advertising is definitely a possibility.

Did you go on any trips this weekend?
On Saturday, I went to the South Street Seaport and we saw the Statue of Liberty. We went on a two hour boat ride. That was fun.

Had you been to New York before?
Yes, but I had never seen the Statue of Liberty before.

And what about Sunday?
I went to the Guggenheim. It was neat, I'd never been there before, either.

Are you much of an art buff?
Not really, but it was kind of neat. I walked around with some of my friends.

Have you found it difficult to make friends here?
No, people are really nice. I've made friends mostly in my living group -- they're fun to hang out with -- but I've been making friends in classes too.

What are you looking forward to most at Explo?
I was really excited about making commercials, so that's fun.

If you had to describe Explo as an object, what would it be?
A sphere because of the all-around fun.

And if you were a kitchen appliance, what would you be?
A spoon, because it's the coolest eating utensil.
