b.j. from maryland (7/22)

B.J., a tenth grader from Maryland, is in his first year at Explo, and though he's not quite sure what to expect, he's looking forward to learning more about the legal system in his mock trial course...and to meeting lots of new people.

It's your first full day of Explo. What's your feeling so far?
It's okay. It's okay. There are a lot of kids.

Have you met many of them?
Yeah, some people in my living group. They're cool.

What's your favorite thing about your living group?
I don't really know them well yet, but I'd say the people.

What was your first course today and what did you do in it?
Mock trial. We learned the basics about the court system, how it works. We learned about all the kinds of things they say in the courtroom.

What will you be doing in that class?
We'll be working on a mock trial. We'll get to that tomorrow. I'm looking forward to learning more about the court and legal system.

Is that something you might study in college?
I might, yeah. It's definitely a possibility.

What about your second course?
My second course is photography. We learned the basics about the camera, how you hold it, different angles, that sort of thing.

And what do you expect to get out of that class?
I expect to learn more about the camera, like how to get the best picture. We'll also be developing photos in the darkroom. So that will be cool.

Do you have any experience with photography?
I have a little bit, not a lot. I have a regular camera, so I take pictures with that. That kind of experience.

And what was your mini-course this afternoon?
I did "De-Stereotype Me". That's my mini-course. It was something [laughs]. We had to write what we thought about people before we knew them.

And have you had a chance to discuss those first impressions yet?
A little bit, we'll discuss it more tomorrow. Most of the impressions are not really that true, but some of them are. I think I'll enjoy the class.

What are you looking forward to this week?
Getting to know some people, and getting to know more about my classes and the subjects. And playing some basketball.

As a new student, what are you looking to get out of Explo?
To have fun and meet some friends.

If you had to describe Explo as an object, what would it be?
Probably an animal of some kind because it always keeps moving. Something moderately fast -- not quite like a cheetah, but definitely not a tortoise.

And if you were a kitchen appliance, what sort would you be?
Probably a refrigerator. I love food.
