getting active

During extracurricular periods at the Senior Program, you can make athletics a part of your summer experience. Your athletic participation could consist of working out in the gym, playing pick-up games on the quad, getting pointers from a Yale coach in a sports clinic, or trying your hand at a sport for the first time. One thing you’ll find at the Senior Program is a love of learning with the body as well as the mind, and through athletic participation you can learn valuable teamwork and leadership skills and have a great time doing it. Whether you are a varsity athlete or a recreational player, Explo offers many options to meet your needs.

sports clinics
Among the exciting athletic possibilities at the Senior Program are sports clinics taught by top NCAA coaches. Taught in premier athletic facilities, all sports clinics are coed and are designed to accommodate students of varying ability levels. In addition to giving you tips and pointers about your technique, coaches can also give you advice about integrating varsity sports into your college experience. Sports clinics are generally taught on weekends, as an on-campus learning opportunity.

the cathedral of sweat

The family of Yale alumnus, Payne Whitney, wanted to fund a chapel in his memory. Yale already had two on-campus chapels, so the University persuaded the family to instead fund an athletic complex. Now nicknamed "The Cathedral of Sweat," the recently renovated Payne Whitney Gymnasium is the largest indoor athletic facility in the world, featuring 4 air-conditioned basketball and volleyball courts, 2 indoor swimming pools, 2 indoor jogging tracks, 26 squash and badminton courts, martial arts and dance studios, and a 20,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center with free weights, weight machines, and cardio workout machines.
