activities, arts, + ideas

Afternoons at the Senior Program offer a number of activities which mirror the extracurricular environment you’ll find when you get to college. With plenty of options and the ability to choose what you’ll participate in, the extracurricular programming at the Senior Program gives you the chance to make each day different. You can play a game of ultimate frisbee, learn improv games, make sushi, join a staff-led discussion, or opt out of activities to play a pick-up game of soccer on the quad, check e-mail, hang out with your suitemates, relax with a book, or go into town for ice cream. At night, you can cap off your day by attending a hip-hop dance show or performing with your friends in a lip-sync contest. The balance of structure and choice at the Senior Program helps prepare you for the task of managing your time and interests in college.

speaker series

Past speakers have included advertising expert Jean Kilbourne, slam poet Kevin Coval, award-winning documentarian Lisa Gossels, and former ice hockey prodigy Travis Roy. You can choose one of three speaker options each Wednesday.

challenge by choice

In addition to other recreational options, activity periods in the afternoon provide a great way for you to choose the discussions, film screenings, and guest speakers that you would like to explore. Activities and speakers touch on sophisticated subjects and are designed to be appropriate for students in a pre-college environment. Topics could include the death penalty, sexual orientation, international human rights abuses, domestic violence, freedom of speech, racism, and safer sexual health practices.

We feel it is important to respect you as young adults, not just as the decision-makers of tomorrow, but as decision-makers today. While you are at the Senior Program, it is important for you to choose your level of challenge and comfort. Many of our discussions are socially and politically controversial. Because we respect the interests and views of students and their families, these activities are strictly voluntary. This environment mirrors what you will find when you get to college and will help give you an invaluable preparation for the years ahead.
