For international students, Exploration provides a chance to explore America's customs, cities, language, culture, and people. Students will make new friends, practice speaking English, and — both in their academic courses and beyond — investigate new ideas that will spark their interest for years to come.
Exploration is an ideal place for international students to improve their English language proficiency. Every part of our schedule (from project-based academic courses, to athletics and activity options, to living with Americans in the dorms) gives international students the opportunity to practice speaking English in an environment that is friendly and supportive.
At our Programs, there aren't two groups — the 'international students' and the 'American students.' There is one group: the Explo community. International and American students interact in all aspects of the day — they take classes together, eat together, go on trips together, and live on dorm halls together — and in each situation, Exploration encourages students to engage with and learn from each other's differences, interests, ideas, and passions. With more than 75% of Exploration's student population coming from the United States, international students get the unique opportunity to participate in and be a part of American culture. And with students coming to Exploration from more than 50 countries, international students are also encouraged to meet, share, and interact with other world cultures and backgrounds different than their own.
Explo courses are ungraded and investigate a range of unique subjects. They provide international students with an active, participatory, and pressure-free environment in which to practice English. Whether it’s a course in forensic science, go-cart construction, pond ecology, or website design, students work together in small groups that foster teamwork, build relationships, and develop critical thinking and communication skills. Because class size is capped at each Program, students are able to receive the individualized attention of their instructor — asking questions and getting help as they work. With trips to New York City, Boston, Washington, DC, and all of New England, international students not only experience American culture while they're at the Program, they get to see America too. Students take in America's skylines, capitals, stadiums, theaters, museums, parks, and many hidden treasures.

Free Airport Pick Up + Drop Off
The moment international students arrive at the airport, our staff is waiting for them. Wearing bright orange "Explo Staff" shirts that make them easy to identify, our faculty members greet students at the airport and escort them to our airport shuttle, which is provided to and from the airport free of charge. Staff ride in the shuttle to campus with students and, upon arrival at Explo, help them register for the Program. Likewise, at the conclusion of each session, Explo staff escort students to the airport and help them get on their returning flights.
TRAVEL PARTNERS
In order to help international families make travel arrangements for their children, Exploration has partnered with Colpitts World Travel. Colpitts is a leader in international travel assistance and is capable of helping families plan safe, full-service travel arrangements to and from Exploration. Colpitts will book flights that arrive during our regular airport pick-up hours and, if families are interested, can quickly determine how many other Exploration students are already on a flight. After the reservation has been made, Colpitts will handle all of the paperwork and send you the full itinerary for your student.

English + Academics
 Designed to serve students with very little English-speaking experience, our Early English Language Learners (EELL) program immerses students in spoken English and in the culture and customs of the Exploration Junior Program. Before signing up for Exploration, international students must be able to speak and understand English at an intermediate level. This ensures that students will be able to participate in all aspects of the Program – from academic courses to residential life to extracurricular activities.
Academic courses at Exploration offer intermediate and advanced English speakers a great language immersion experience because they are not lecture style, but instead are active and project based. They allow international students, whatever their English-speaking abilities, to participate in academic activities with peers and practice communicating at a level that's comfortable for them.
For students interested in more formal English instruction, we offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. ESOL courses are small and focus on spoken English. Students practice the language through role-play activities that involve aspects of US culture (for instance, ordering food at restaurants or discussing TV shows). This approach gives students a context for learning the language, while simultaneously introducing them to customs of American life as well as the vernacular of spoken American English.
ESOL courses cost an additional $295. Students may take one ESOL course per session at the Program. For their other class, students choose among the remaining courses in our academic offerings. If you have any questions about ESOL or our academic courses, please contact our Admissions Office.
