activity periods While courses and mini-courses give students a chance to have an in-depth experience in a specific subject, activity periods are designed to allow students to explore an even wider variety of interests. Each day, the Junior Program newsletter, the Explorer, lists all activity offerings. Students participate in up to three activity periods per day (not including free swim time), and choose from many activities each period. Below is a listing of the types of activities that are typically offered during the summer at the Junior Program: athletics tennis, free swim, basketball, lacrosse, yoga, baseball, archery, field hockey, aerobics, bocce, bombardment, ultimate Frisbee, flag football, soccer, canoeing arts watercolor painting, friendship bracelets, collages, origami, plexiglass postcards, decoupage, batik, bookmaking, tie-dyeing, calligraphy, sketching, finger puppets, clay, sculpture, jewelry making. science and nature science trivia, domino challenges, basic first aid, wilderness survival, nature walks, soap-making, lip balm-making, bird watching, marshmallow buildings. discussions current events, friendships, divorce, environmental issues, sports heroes and legends, peer pressure junior program originals cork critters, dining hall dudes, nature boats in peril, Potter pouches, euro-handball, bouncy-ball dream machine, power Cheerios, squish main events Most nights there is an Exploration Main Event. Two or three nights a week the stage is home to student and staff generated talent shows, game shows, and recitals. During other nights, professional performers come to the Explo stage. main event examples: Yarina Inca Band, Carnival Night, Staff Improv Show, Student Talent Show, Off-Broadway Night, Staff vs. Staff Soccer, African Rhythms and World Music, Tanglewood Marionettes, Airborne Comedians, The Final Party. theme day thursdays Captain Hook, Superman, Obi-wan, or Harry Potter. You never know who you’ll see wandering the halls on Theme Day Thursdays. Students are always encouraged to pack their favorite costumes for the summer, because on “Island Adventure”or “Superhero” day, an extra straw hat or cape might come in handy. ![]()

getting active! During the summer, Explo days are packed with things to do. In addition to offering more relaxing options like board games or puppet making, we also require our students to participate in a handful of activities designed to get them up and moving. These activities range from walking a dog to playing soccer; from capture the flag to dancing. |
