Elisabeth from New Hampshire (8/4)
Elisabeth, a 6th grade residential Voyager, is directing a video all about how regular people can become "Superhuman" in her class "I Want My Explo TV." As if that doesn't keep her busy enough, she's also running DNA and blood samples in "CSI: Explo," and hammering out her throwing and catching skills in her flag football workshop. So what did you do today? Today I went swimming in the pool and had my courses. My first course is music video production (“I Want My Explo TV”). We're making a music video for the song "Superhuman" by Chris Brown. Sounds cool. What happens in the video? It's a video of regular people doing super stuff. Good deeds and things like that. Like picking up trash, stopping fights, even stopping robberies. We have a gorilla suit that we took from backstage and one of the people dresses up in it and steals a freezie pop from the stage. Then someone comes and stops him from stealing it. So what went into making the video? First we had to plan out everything we were going to do. We had to pick out our costumes, put everything into detail, and write down where we were going to shoot everything. Now we're shooting and editing. We started filming on Friday but didn't get a lot done, so we spent all day today filming. Sounds like things are coming along. What's your other class? It's “CSI: Explo.” We've been solving some crimes and uncovering mysteries about fake murders and stuff. We've solved crimes with fake murders where we had to figure out why they happened and what the motives were. It's been pretty cool. Now we're starting a big mystery that we're going to be working on until the end of the session. We don't know that much about it yet, other than that a man gets murdered. We've started running some labs, like DNA and blood samples. Complex stuff. What are your teachers like? Brandon is my teacher for music video production and he's really cool. Whenever our group can't decide on things, he always steps in and helps out. Colleen for "CSI" is really cool. She gives us hints and helps us out a little. She's awesome. The teachers are way cooler here than they are at school. I guess they're just more fun here because at school the teachers can be kind of boring. Tell me a bit about your experience as a first year residential student. It's really cool. I've hung out with the girls in my hall so much. When we're in our rooms, we all go from room to room and hang out a lot. Victoria and I -- she's my roommate -- we get along super well. She's from Venezuela. My RA's are Angela and Sharada. They're really nice. They are pretty cool to hang out with, too. They come to breakfast, lunch, and dinner with us. So your roommate is from Venezuela? Have you met a lot of people from different places? I met a girl from Japan, a lot of other girls from Venezuela, and people from all over the US. It's really cool to meet people from different places because it's cool to see what different things they do there. We talk about it sometimes -- not, like, every day, but we have a good time talking about it. We'll compare things we do at home, and we do a lot of things the same. What does the word “Explo” mean to you? Fun and education. First I thought it was going to be all education, but it was a lot of fun. They teach you things in a good way and you make so many friends. Like, "CSI" has been both fun and educational. We learn how to do a lot of stuff but we have so much fun doing it. It's been really cool because I've never tried anything like that before. Have you tried any other new things at Explo? Flag football. It's mostly boys in my workshop and I'm the only girl. It's been really cool because I've learned a lot about football and how to throw and catch a football. We've been working on passing and catching and we played one little game. It was my first and I was a little confused, but it was really cool. If Explo was a dessert, what would it be and why? Marble cake, because I really like marble cake and I really like Explo. more conversations > first session | second session |
