Camille from Massachusetts (8/01)

While Camille has been here for four years, she doesn't let her familiarity with the people prevent her from meeting new and different students and staff. Busy making a music video in "I Want My Explo TV" and writing a musical in "Which Way to Broadway," she still finds time to try new activities and explore new options.

What did you do yesterday?
Yesterday we had activities in the morning, then lunch. After that I had my courses: “I Want My Explo TV” and “Which Way to Broadway.” In “I Want My Explo TV” we're making a music video to the song “4 Minutes” by Madonna and Justin Timberlake. Today we started filming.

What's gone into the making of your music video?
Well, basically, we're all superheroes, and there are two people who are victims, and we're saving them. So, first we did a lot of brainstorming and planning. We sat down and planned out each shot of our music video. Today we started filming it. Yesterday we went to the costume bin and got costumes. We're going to start editing next week. I'm one of the superheroes.

Awesome! And what are you doing in “Which Way to Broadway?”
Well it's musical theater, so we're doing a musical called “Celebricide,” which is about all of these teen celebrities. So in it, someone has murdered the Jonas Brothers, and Nancy Drew comes and tries to figure out the mystery. I'm playing Demi Lovato.

How much of the performance is created by the students?
Well, last session they did “Celebricide,” too. We used the basic idea of that and the script, but we added characters and lines, because there are more students in the class than there were last session. We've also changed up some of the songs. We decided on new characters for the script, and added lines into it. It'll be different, but based on the same idea.

How would you compare Explo with school?
Well Explo is a lot more fun. You still learn stuff here, but it's more like activities that you wouldn't necessarily see at school. A lot of the things we get to do here is pretty out of the ordinary. They aren't things you'd get to do anywhere else. Like “Potato Scrimshaw,” for instance. . . when would you do that outside of Explo? Or there was an activity called “Grasping at Straws.” Where else could you do that? But it's so much fun. Also, it's not just the activities. The courses here are different from school. A lot of schools wouldn't teach web design or wilderness survival. You don't really learn movie-making in school. A lot of the workshops, too, aren't things you would get to do in school.

What are your teachers like?
For musical theater I have Sharada and Alyssa, and Brandon teaches “I Want My Explo TV.” They're all really nice. Everyone here is really crazy and nice and awesome. I think they're all different. . . from different places and with different personalities.

What's your day group like?
They're awesome. Every year that I've been here my day group has been awesome. A lot of the people have the same interests as me and my DA's are really awesome. My DA's are Kendyl and Clara. Kendyl is really nice, and we always see her taking photos around campus. Clara is really nice too. They're both really funny. The other girls in my group are great too. I knew some of them from last year, and there are some new people. It's kind of a mix.

Was it easy to meet the new people?
Yeah, it's really easy. The people here are all really friendly. You can just go up to someone and say “Hey what's your name? I'm Camille. . .” and everyone just wants to make new friends, because a lot of people come here not knowing anyone.

What does the word “Explo” make you think of?
I think about all of the people I've met since I started coming here, and the differences in people. Like, my first year here, I met a girl from Korea and we still keep in touch, and that was four years ago. And then the staff here are from different places all around the world. There are people from really different cultures and you learn different things about different places.

If Explo were a type of dessert, what would it be and why?
It would be some type of imaginary cake, because everything here is different from other places, and in an awesome way.
