Asia from Massachusetts (7/25)

Asia is honing her acting skills in "Which Way to Broadway" and "Ready, Set, Act!" Expect to see her on the big stage one day, but before that, she'll be performing at Explo's Off-Broaday Night.

What did you do yesterday?
I played some basketball because I love it. It kind of runs in the family. [In the basketball workshop,] we were practicing and Shev told us that each day we were going to shoot from the free throw line and that she would count how many shots we make and compare it. It was fun.

What classes are you taking?
I'm taking “Ready, Set, Act,” which is a theater and arts course, and “Which Way to Broadway,” which is a musical theater course.

What are you doing in them now?
In musical theater, we're actually going to sing and act for the Program towards the end. It's going to be murder mystery about the Jonas brothers. So right now we're making characters who might have killed them. I'm playing Ashley Tisdale. We're going to have all these cool costumes.

Do you think classes at Explo are different from the classes you take at school?
Yeah. They're more fun. It's so creative. The classes in school can be fun sometimes, but it's just better and more fun here. The teachers are fun, too. They're teaching us exciting things and they like it.

Awesome. So it's your first year and you're a res student. Tell me a bit about your living group.
It's good. I like sleeping over here. My roommate is Emma and she's really nice as well. My RA is Sharada and she's a lot of fun. During our hall time we usually just decorate the place and just have fun.

If you had a friend who was thinking about coming to Explo, what would you tell them?
I would tell them that it's great and that the food is good! [Laughs.] Everyone is just nice.

Was it easy to meet people, being a first-year student?
Yes. When I first came here I was really scared and shy and I didn't really want to talk to anyone, but then I got the hang of it within, like, two days and I started to talk to everyone. You make friends pretty quickly.

What new things have you tried at Explo?
I'd never played two square before. When I got here, I was playing four square, and my friends started teaching me how to play two square. I really didn't get it at first, but now I understand it. I thought it was weird at first, but it's really a lot of fun.

Is there anything you're particularly looking forward to at Explo?
I'm looking forward to getting better at acting and being a better actress. I do a bit of acting at home also. I've been in acting classes at my “real” school. I'm also looking forward to building my basketball skills. I play a lot of basketball with my sisters at home.

If Explo was a type of dessert, what would it be and why?
Strawberry ice cream! Because I love strawberry ice cream. . . Vanilla too. I love them both.
