Peter from Massachusetts (7/8)

Peter is going into the 6th grade, and is back for his third summer at the Junior Program. Only a week in, Peter is thrilled about the summer and describes Explo as simply the best time of his life.

So what did you do yesterday?
I had my courses. For “Ready Set Act,” which is my improv course, we played a lot of games -- like, acting games and stuff. For “Thrill Ride,” which is a Lego engineering class, we started building roller coasters. But they actually weren't Legos. They were these little balls that you connect poles into. Then there are these little ropes with marbles that control the motion.

Was that hard to do?
It was complicated at first but you get used to it. It's tough because we do one different thing each week, so we have to adapt to a new type of building. We were confused at first but we started to figure it out.

What kind of games did you play in improv?
We did one where one person is walking around, and he's making a noise, and everyone is repeating that noise. Then one person changes it, and everyone starts mimicking that, and it sort of changes the whole way through.

What makes the classes here different from the classes at school?
You never learn this stuff in school. You never talk about improv at school. You don't get to do anything like this at school. Plus the teachers are way different than regular teachers. They're young, which is good because they're not all bossy all the time and they can have fun with you.

What would you say is the coolest thing you've done at Explo?
Pretty much everything. It's pretty hard to say that something's been bad at Explo -- that something has been not as good as it could have been at Explo.

Did you go on any of the trips this past weekend?
Actually, I went to two. I went to Battleship Cove and the Worcester Tornadoes baseball game. Battleship Cove was really neat because there were all of these ships with tons of old equipment and stuff. It was huge! We learned a lot there. The Worcester Tornadoes game was really fun. When we went in, we had a buffet which was delicious.

What does “Explo” mean to you?
Explo means fun . . . freedom. It means pretty much having the best time of your life.

What's your day group like?
They're really supportive and goofy sometimes. All sorts of things. We haven't had any problems at all because we all get along so well.

So this is your third year at Explo. What brings you back?
Everything. You get to do things that you like when you're here, but you also get to do things that you never get to do at home -- because maybe you don't have the equipment or don't have the people to help you. It's fun to come here because you get to try new things, and you also get to do the same things.

If Explo were a type of dessert, what would it be and why?
I'd say it would be an entire dessert buffet because there's everything here, and it doesn't stop until the last day.
