Nathan from Pennsylvania (7/6)

We noticed Nathan as he was rocking the wallball court. A rising 5th grader, Nathan has come back to Explo for a second summer because, as he says it, "Explo always feels right."

So what did you do yesterday?
Yesterday I was in my classes. One of them is Pinewood Derby. We're each making cars out of wood and we're going to race them at the end of the class. Yesterday we started cutting out our stands for our cars. My other class is Big Dig Lego Challenge, where we're trying to rebuild the kind of tools they would need in the Big Dig, which is where they were digging all these tunnels into downtown Boston. So we need to model the machinery that was used then, which is what we started doing yesterday.

What else happened yesterday?
Well, yesterday it was kind of rainy, so we were in the Field House. We got to play a lot of wallball, two-square, four-square. Those are a lot of fun.

What was the biggest reason why you wanted to come back to Explo this summer?
'Cause it was fun! My classes were science-y, but not boring science.

What makes Explo courses different from classes at school?
In school, every four months we'll do a fun and cool project, but at Explo we do one every single day. The classes are also really good just because we get to do them more than any other things. All of the projects come out really well, and they're more fun because we get to spend so much time with them. My teachers are cool too. Mac teaches my Pinewood Derby class and he was my RA last year. It's fun to be with him. Adam is my teacher for Big Dig, and he's really funny. He also gets us to build our machines in different ways, which makes it more fun.

If you had a friend who was interested in coming to Explo, what would you tell them?
I'd tell them about all the things we can do here. It would depend on what fits their personality. Like, say they like sports, I'd tell them how they can do lacrosse and soccer and football, but if they like to be inside in the air conditioning, they could be building with dominoes or playing board games.

Is there one thing you're looking forward to more than anything else?
I don't mean it in a bad way, but the Final Party is really cool. You just get to hang out on the upper and lower quads, and there's soda and ice cream and there's music playing. It's a lot of fun. Final Party is awesome.

What's the coolest activity you've done at Explo?
Well, last year we had an activity called "Walk Around Like You Own the Place." It's really fun . . . we just walk around the campus and pretend to act really snooty. It's ridiculous but really funny. So far this summer, though, I'd say the best activity I did was making flip-books. Mine didn't turn out that well, but it was still a lot of fun.

If Explo were an ice cream sundae, what would be in it and what would be its toppings?
Umm . . . It would be whatever exactly fit my mood. Like, if I wanted a lot of ice cream and toppings, it would have that. If I didn't want a lot, it wouldn't be much ice cream at all, because Explo always fits right . Like, on one day, if it's raining, Explo makes the rain good. And if it's sunny, Explo fits to the sun. It fits to the surroundings and always feels right.
