Garrett from Illinois (7/1)

We saw Garrett while he was rocking the wallball competition. A residential student entering the 7th grade, Garrett is loving his classes in aerodynamics and Lego engineering. If Explo were an ice cream sundae, Garrett says it would be vanilla with dolce de lecce, because it's so much fun and it all goes so smoothly.

What did you do yesterday?
We were in our first day of classes. I'm in Explo Air Show and Goofy Gadgets. So, in Goofy Gadgets we do Lego engineering and can make all sorts of things. I built a car; another student built a flying fortress. In the end we had to come up with an idea so that they would all work together.

Tell me about Explo Air Show.
Explo Air Show is about aerodynamics. Yesterday we tried to build the world's worst airplane. It was really weighted to one side. It barely flew -- it only went for about one second or so. Then we tried to build a more aerodynamic airplane and talked about the differences between them.

Those both sound awesome! What are the teachers for your classes like?
They're really cool! They make the classes fun. It's different than the teachers at school. The classes are different too. They're more fun, and there's no homework.

Are there any trips you're especially looking forward to?
I definitely want to go to Water Country again. It's really cool, 'cause the rides are good and the food is good there, too. Also Wind Tunnels and Wind Mills is a popular [trip]. It's like skydiving simulation. There's a room with a gigantic fan at the floor, and you put this suit on and you can pretend like you're skydiving.

So this is your second year at Explo. What was it that made you want to come back?
Well, it was just a lot of fun last year, and I wanted to have fun again this summer. It's a really cool place to be, so I felt like coming back this year would be a good choice.

Do you know what workshops you're in?
I know my first one is chess. I'm not very good at it right now and I always wanted to get better at it. It's not really something you get to learn in school, so I figured I'd take it here.

How's your residential group?
Good! I only knew two of them from last year, so everyone else is new. But it's really easy to meet new people so it's not a big deal.

So, if Explo were an ice cream sundae, what would it be made of and what would be in it?
Hmm . . . let me think . . . I think it would be vanilla with dolce de lecce on it, because it tastes good, it's lots of fun to eat, and it's smooth.
