kathleen from new york (6/30)
Kathleen, a 6th grader from New York, is back for her third summer at the Junior Program. She loves the food at Explo and she can't wait for the weekend field trips. Is this your first year at Explo? No, it’s my third. Your third?! You must really like Explo then. Yeah, it’s really fun. And there’s really good food. My favorite part is probably the courses and mini-courses. This year I’m taking the cheerleading mini-course and “Move Over Rembrandt”, the painting course. I forget what my other courses are. Why do you love coming back to Explo? Well, it’s really, really fun . . . and also [I like] being away from home for a change. Do you know many people here? Have you run into anyone from past summers? Just a few people from my hall last year, but I’m also starting to meet some new people already. What are you most excited about this summer? I can’t wait for . . . the food! I hope there are some new things. Last year I really liked the rice. And there’s always rice, so that’s good! I’m also excited for the trips. Last year I really enjoyed the Big Apple Circus and Manners & Etiquette. Those were my favorites and they were really fun. The Big Apple Circus had a ton of acrobats and a really funny mime. And they had good snacks. Manners & Etiquette was great, too. First, we learned about manners and stuff on campus in the dining hall, like how to fold your napkin and stuff. Then we went to a very fancy tea place and kind of just . . . drank tea and ate little tiny sandwiches. You have to wear fancy clothes there. This summer I want to go on the Water Country trip because I love water parks. What’s the most unusual thing you brought with you this summer? The most unusual thing I brought was my bear. My stuffed bear is blue and it’s named Junior. My dad got it for me because he knows my favorite color is blue. Blue is my favorite color too. What do you like about being a residential student at Explo? The rooms are pretty nice and comfortable, and they smell good. I haven’t met my roommate yet but I’m really excited to. I hope she likes The Jonas Brothers! That’s my favorite band. How is Explo different than school? Well, you get to sleep over -- you never get to sleep over at school. And it’s really fun! The classes are different because you definitely don’t have to do homework! And they're fun! The Explo staff members are really cool, and it’s easy to make friends here. What’s the craziest, goofiest thing that has ever happened to you at Explo? Well last year when we were in class one day, a few staff members ran in dressed as pigs and started sniffing around. It was really funny! Theme days are always fun and silly too. I love Superhero Day. I’m not sure which superhero I’m going to dress up as this year, though. Do you have any special goals for this summer? I want to go on a trip to the zoo. I love zoos. Well, you would definitely love the trip to Roger Williams Zoo, then! If you had to pick one word to describe Explo, what would it be? Hmm . . . "Fun"! There are a lot of fun things and activities to do. more conversations > first session | second session |
