carly from kentucky (7/19)

Carly is getting excited for her upcoming year in 8th grade. While many day students are from Massachusetts, Carly hails from Kentucky. When she's not spending the night at Explo, she stays with her cousin who also attends the Intermediate Program as a day student. We spotted Carly chopping thick boards in half with her hands and feet in "Just For Kicks".

So you’re a day student but from Kentucky?
Yeah, I’m staying with my cousin. She’s here at the Program too.

How do you like Explo?
I like it. I want to come back next year really bad, and I want to try to come for two sessions.

What classes are you taking?
I’m taking “Move Over, Tommy Hilfiger” and karate.

How is, or I guess now the question is, how was “Move Over, Tommy Hilfiger”?
I got to model last night at Off-Broadway Night. It was really, really fun. We got to sketch out all these designs we wanna make, and last week we started making them. Then, last night we got to model them.

What did you make?
I made this kind of cut up softball t-shirt with jewels all over it, with my name and “Explo” on the back of it.

What made you want to take fashion design?
I’ve wanted to start fashion design because I heard they make a lot of money, and that it's actually really fun and they get to travel all over the world.

How do you like your teachers?
I love my day advisors, Laura and Mark. They’re really, really nice to hang out with. And also my course teachers, too. Like Mike -- he’s really fun. And Marta is, too.

How have you found meeting new people here?
It’s actually been really easy for me. I have a good group of friends and have gotten to meet new people through them.

What were you expecting when you came to Explo? Has it met your expectations?
Well, since it’s at a college, I thought it would be really educational and kind boring . . . but it's a lot more fun than I expected and not boring at all.

Do you think Expo is preparing you for high school or college?
Probably the courses we take like interior design or “Move Over Tommy Hilfiger” will be really good when I get into college or high school since not a lot of kids will have taken those classes yet.

So, I saw you breaking boards today -- very impressive! Had you done karate before Explo?
My brother did it for eight years, and he said it was a lot a lot of fun and that I should try it. Now that I’ve done it, I really like it . . . especially with the teachers I’ve had, Alex and Mark. They showed me a lot, so I want to keep it up.

If Explo had a mascot, what would it be?
Um, I think it would be something sporty. Something orange and purple that shows what Explo is about: educational but sort of at the same time showing what you can do at Explo. Maybe just a big fun “E”.

So this is your last day at Explo for the year. What will you miss the most?
My friends and the staff. I’m gonna miss all my friends I met here a lot.
