liora from massachusetts (7/3)

Liora, a day student, is a rising 9th-grader from Massachusetts. This is her first year at Exploration and she is excited to try skydiving and learn about aeronautics. Also, this swimmer loves to read.

So what mini-course did you take this morning?
Yoga, and then I’ll be doing jewelry-making this afternoon.

Cool. What are your regular courses?
I’m taking the “Lyin’, the Wig, and the Wardrobe” and “Fascination with Flight.”

What’s the “Lyin’, the Wig, and the Wardrobe”?
Theatrical make up and costume design.

Oh great, I was there taking pictures yesterday. It looked like you were reading a play?
Yeah, we were reading scripts. For those plays, we were seeing what they were about and then giving costumes and props to the characters without knowing a whole lot about the play.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really like to read.

Any favorite books?
Umm. . .I really like the Harry potter books though. . .fantasy, I guess.

So have you tried anything new at Explo yet?
I tried ultimate frisbee. . .I’m so uncoordinated, though. [Laughs] Its kind of like, “Oh, look, a frisbee. . .and its way over there.”

Yeah I’m rather uncoordinated myself. What are you expecting from Explo as a program? What are you looking to get out of Explo?
What am I expecting? I’d like to make some more friends and I'm realy interested in the “Fascination with Flight” class. I’ve never learned about aeronautics.

Tell me more about that,
Well, Adam teaches it. And right now we’re making a lot of paper airplanes and modifying them. We’ve been learning about how lift affects the airplane, and how you change the shape of the wings to create more lift and turn.

What else are you doing in that class?
We all really want to make a blimp, so I think we’ll do that at some point.

What’s your favorite thing about being a day student?
I think just meeting so many people from all over and then having the chance to go home at the end of day to do other stuff.

Why did you choose Explo over other summer opportunities?
I’ve had a couple of friends do it, and I liked the number of choices you had. And you have other people to teach you and tell you about their specialized areas.

Any idea what you want to do after high school?
Definitely college. And then, I don’t know. . .it changes everyday.

Is there something you’re really excited to try at Explo?
I saw the skydiving trip, so I might do that.
