miguel from spain (7/2)

Miguel is a rising 9th-grader from Spain. This is his third year at Exploration as a residential student and he is excited to learn even more english. This aspiring buisnessman and renaissance-teen sails, plays lots of soccer and loves to draw.

How did you hear about Explo?
My dad went to St. Mark's School [which hosts the Exploration Junior Program] when he was 18 for a year. He met with people he went to St. Mark’s with a few years again, so that’s how he knew about it. And so this is my third year.

So do you already know a lot of students here since you are a returner?
A few but not that many.

What classes are you taking here?
The first one is “English Café” and the second one is “Sketchers,” which is about painting and drawing. . .and I like drawing, so it's good.

Ah ha! An artist! What else do you like to do in your spare time?
Soccer, sailing, sports, having fun with my friends.

Oh great, are you taking the sailing mini-course?
Yes. I usually sail in Spain a lot, my family has a boat.

What are some of your favorite things about being here for the summer?
The people are very different -- like the kind of jokes we do in Spain and here are very different. And the sports are very different. American football is played here, but we play a lot of football, soccer here.

Did you watch the Euro-cup at all?
Yeah. Spain won!

Oh wow, I’ve been here so I didn’t get to watch the final games. Nice job, Spain!
Thanks! [laughs]

What’s something you’re really looking forward to learning at Explo?
Uh, learning more English.

What’s your favorite thing about being a residential student?
I don’t know, sleeping away from home, I don’t have to make my bed every day (laughs) so its pretty cool.

What do you miss most about Explo when you’re not here?
The people I knew.

Do you keep in touch with friends you’ve met here?
I try, but it's hard because we have the time change.

What was the strangest thing you packed?
The strangest thing I packed? Hm. . .uh, my. . .I don’t know. I didn’t bring anything strange. Last year I brought my Spanish flag, but not this year. When I first came here I went to Washington, DC and there were so many American flags, I was so surprised.

Lastly, what are your future plans? Would you like to go to college in the states?
I’d like to be a businessman, but I think I prefer to go to college in Spain.
