kia from massachusettes (7/01)
Kia from Boston is a film-maker and fashion-enthusiast. She will be entering 9th grade in the fall. We originally started talking to Kia because her magenta shirt caught our eye . . . and are impressed to hear about her self-taught editing skills and try-anything attitude! First of all, welcome to Explo! What was your first course today? I did “See it, Make it, Watch it.” After the teacher introduced the course, we watched a movie clip and discussed all of the elements of it. . .as well as all of the aspects that go into making a movie. Sounds interesting. What made you take that particular course? I was interested in film before. I had done a couple of movie projects at home. I figured this way I’d learn more and get to have fun doing it with a bunch of other kids! So what type of films have you made? Mostly documentary. I started making them after my family went on a trip and we had a lot of random footage. I just kind of put it together one day and edited it into a final piece. . .and it was a lot of fun, so, yeah, I kept doing more. So what was your second course this morning? “Move over Tommy Hilfiger," the fashion design course. Today we measured one another, and soon we’ll be sewing our own clothes that we can wear -- which is going to be really fun. What activities are you doing this afternoon, after the day student orientation? I’m not sure yet. There are a lot to choose from, so I haven’t decided. What about mini-courses, what are you doing for those? Well, for a mini-course, I’m going to be taking squash, which I’m really excited for. I play a lot of tennis, and squash is kind of similar and looks like so much fun. What made you come to Explo? I have a friend that went to the Junior Program and she really like it, so I decided to come with her. Also, I was looking at summer programs anyways, and Explo just seems so different from everything else. How exactly did it seem different? Everyone has so many different options. . .the whole range of activities. . .the fact that there are so many options and so many new things to try! What are you expecting from Explo? Definitely the whole ‘make new friends thing’; to have fun, but also to learn something as well; to take something out of it that I wouldn’t expect to do. What has surprised you the most about Explo so far? How involved the teachers are in their courses and just how excited and enthusiastic they are. They really want us to understand why they have such a passion for what they teach. more conversations > first session | second session |
