our philosophy:
summer is a time for learning

Exploration believes that summer is the perfect time for young people to expand their horizons, try something new, and learn in a pressure-free environment. Our courses are ungraded, so students don't feel pressured to produce -- instead, through a series of structured choices and risks, our students spend the summer enjoying the process of learning.

the exploration mission statement
Exploration Summer Programs creates a dynamic environment of intellectual inquiry, responsible decision making and spirited adventure.  Led by enthusiastic teachers, our students are encouraged to respect the differences that make us individuals and to find the common ground that makes us a community.  At its heart, Exploration inspires students to challenge themselves, discover the world of people and ideas, and experience the joy of learning.

We promise families that at Exploration their children will be safe, intellectually stimulated, encouraged to pursue new interests and ideas, and to think about the world from different perspectives. To meet this end, we hire our faculty of college and graduate students from the nation's top colleges and universities. From the beginning, it has been our belief that current college and graduate students who are excited about their fields and excited about teaching are the perfect role-models for our students.

While Exploration offers specific courses and mini-courses for students, we take a holistic approach to student education. Our faculty members are pushed to be triple-threat educators: teachers in the classroom, advisors in residential life, and coaches in extracurricular activities and athletics. By involving our faculty in all phases of student life, we try and make each moment of a student's day a learning moment.

In addition to being a place for student growth, Exploration has always had a firm commitment to the personal growth and professional development of our faculty. Supported by a trained staff of educational professionals, our faculty are pushed to make the most of their talents at Exploration. In addition to teaching experience, faculty members gain a wide variety of multi-tasking, organizational, and interpersonal skills during the summer which travel with them into whatever professional fields they pursue.

Our students and faculty come from a variety of socio-economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and bring with them a set of interests that vary from theatre and the arts, to science and athletics, to computers and politics. Last year, over 40 states and 40 countries were represented at our Programs. We believe that the diversity of our student body and faculty is one of our biggest resources and we strive to create an inclusive environment that offers each member of our community a forum in which to share their unique perspectives.

While everybody involved with Exploration is unique, there is one common strand that holds the Exploration community together: a love of learning. As a self-selected group, our student body has chosen to spend their summer at an academic enrichment program because they want to learn. This student enthusiasm, coupled with Exploration's progressive educational model, creates the perfect environment in which to introduce students to new concepts, new disciplines, and entirely new ideas.
