The World Comes to Your Backyard
Explo at Yale offers you more than just an average day program — this summer you will interact with people and ideas the world over. From weekend trips to staying late (and overnight!), as a day student, you'll experience all the perks of Explo right in your own backyard.
As a day student, take full advantage of everything that Explo at Yale has to offer!
- Arrive as early as 7:30am.
- Leave as late as 11:00pm.
- Stay over up to three nights a week with your living group.
- Participate in evening main events and weekend trips.
We want you to get acclimated to Explo as quickly as possible, so on the Sunday before the start of each session we invite day students to an early registration with our residential students. You will have a chance to meet with the students and staff in your advisory group, tour the campus, and review the rules and procedures of Explo. That way, when you arrive on Monday, you'll be ready to hit the ground running!
Engaging Your Community by Day
Day students are fully engaged in all aspects of Explo at Yale. You'll be placed in a living group with other day and residential students. You'll check-in with your living group and Residential Advisors (RAs) twice a day (8:45am and 1:15pm) and they will help keep you posted on all of the options available at Explo. In addition, all day students meet together after lunch at 1:00pm for a daily check-in.
Evening + Late Night Options
Although many day students leave just before dinner (5:45 PM), day students are encouraged to stay into the evening as often as they wish and may stay overnight at the program up to three nights per week. (There are charges for staying late and overnight to cover additional meals and housing costs.) In addition, as a day student you can also opt to participate in weekend trips and special events.
Day Student Transportation
The Yale University campus is centrally located and easily accessible from greater New Haven, many towns along the shore of Long Island Sound, and the greater Hartford area. Day students check in with staff upon arrival at the program each day, giving information about their mode and time of departure for that day. Day students have several transportation options for reaching the campus:
Public Transportation
Many day students come to the program by train. There is commuter rail service from towns North, East, and West of New Haven. We provide a free bus shuttle between the Old Campus and Union Station in New Haven each morning and early evening.
Car Transportation
Students arriving by car should be dropped off at Phelps Gate between 8:00 and 8:45am and can be picked up anytime between 5:45 and 10:45pm daily. If a student needs to leave early, a parent or guardian should contact the Main Office. Students may drive themselves to and from the program, but may not give rides to residential students. Arrangements can be made for free parking in a local garage near the Old Campus.
Bicycle Transportation
Students living close enough to the program may ride their bicycle to and from Explo, provided they bring a lock, wear a helmet, and only bike during daylight hours.
