College Search Concentration
Unsure of what you’re looking for in a college? Feeling a little nervous about the daunting admissions process? Want to get a leg up? The College Search Concentration will help you discover the schools that could be a good match for you and develop the skills necessary to navigate the admissions process like a pro.
- One-on-one College Advising
- Visits With Admissions Officers
- Admissions Overview
- Essay Strategies
- Mock Interviews
The College Search Concentration takes the place of a morning course and involves some one-on-one counseling and admissions work that takes place outside of regular classtime.
Previously an assistant director of admission at Smith College and a college counselor at Northfield Mount Hermon School, Sarah is now a college advisor at Newton North High School. In addition to teaching the College Search Concentration, Sarah sits on our College Counseling Advisory Committee.
Demystifying the College Application Process
The aim of the College Search Concentration is to help you navigate the complicated college admission maze. Taught by professional college advisor Sarah Hoffman, this morning course alternative helps you identify interests, skills, and other aspects of yourself that are critically important when trying to find colleges and universities that will be a good match.
You will learn how to evaluate websites, college tours, and what questions you should ask on a campus visit. You will learn about writing a strong college application essay, how to prepare for interviews, and the importance of teacher recommendations — and who to ask to write on your behalf. As part of a mock admissions committee, you'll discover what factors admission committees consider and how they weigh those factors when making decisions.
The concentration will help you figure out what is important to you — both inside and outside the classroom — so you can be better prepared to take on the challenge of finding a school that is the right fit.
Concentration Details
The College Search Concentration is only offered during first session and is available for an additional charge of $295. The concentration requires some additional time outside of the classroom for one-on-one counseling and admissions work. (All students in the concentration will have at least one hour of individualized admissions counseling.)
Additional College Preparatory Offerings
Outside of class, the College Search Concentration not only offers the opportunity for one-on-one college counseling, but also helps you navigate the additional college preparatory offerings offered at Explo at Yale, including Wednesday and weekend college visits, a college fair, and other admissions discussions and forums.
In addition to the College Search Concentration, Explo at Yale also offers a weekend College Search Seminar and a second Wednesday College Admissions Symposium. While students are welcome to sign up for these options in addition to the College Search Concentration, they do cover similar topics.
