Activities, Arts, + Ideas
During EXPLO at Yale, afternoons offer a number of activities which mirror the extracurricular environment you'll find when you get to college. With plenty of options and the ability to choose what you'll participate in, EXPLO at Yale’s extracurricular programming gives you the chance to make each day different.
You can play a game of ultimate Frisbee, learn basic American Sign Language, make guacamole, join a staff-led discussion, or opt out of activities to check your email, hang out with your suitemates, relax with a book, or go into town for ice cream. At night, you cap off your day by attending a hip-hop dance show or watching a hypnotist at our Main Event. The balance of structure and choice at EXPLO at Yale will help you prepare for the task of managing your time and interests in college.
Up for Discussion
In addition to daily recreational options during activity periods, we occasionally provide opportunities for further exploration through panel and group discussions, as well as guest speakers. Topics are always presented in an age-appropriate manner and may include the death penalty, sexual orientation, international human rights abuses, domestic violence, freedom of speech, and racism. Because we respect the interests and views of students and their families, participation in these activities are strictly voluntary and additional activity options are also offered during these times.
Main Events
After a busy day at EXPLO, the evenings are the perfect time to unwind. In the past, main events at EXPLO at Yale have included bands from the college circuit, dance troupe Phunk Phenomenon, improv comedy troupes, and hypnotists. Other main events are generated by students and staff, such as Explopalooza, Carnival Night, and the Staff Talent Show. In addition, each session, the Program takes over Toad's Place, New Haven's legendary night club, for an EXPLO-exclusive dance party.
